The work of Koen van der Broek (Belgium, 1973) transcribes the borders of urban spaces just like the constructed and deconstructed landscape. This gives rise to semi-abstract canvases in uniform shades and undefined borders and pictorial elements. Interrogatives are posed on the perspective and depth of the space painted, translating the compositional structure of an environment which has become almost evanescent. Bereft of human figures, monuments, or any other clearly identifiable references, the scene is suspended, as if waiting to be evoked.
